People are NOT “Thats”!

One use of pronouns that gets under my skin is the use of “that” when referencing people. People are “whos”, not “thats”. The example I have for you is, unfortunately, from Glenn Beck’s website (10/11/12) which reads, “Jake Tapper is one of the only journalists left in the mainstream media that isn’t afraid to go after this administration and ask the tough questions.”

While there are plenty of times I don’t like ascribing human qualities to journalists, it remains that they are. So, the word ‘who’ should be used in that sentence.

Let’s stop making people into things, OK? If nothing else, it’ll slow down any Hitlers among us….
